SAHS Academics > Block Scheduling > How Block Scheduling Works
Souderton Area High School has adopted a hybrid block scheduling model that is a combination of a 4x4 block and an alternating day block. In a 4x4 block, students complete a "full-year" course in one semester by taking it every day for 85 minutes. A "one semester" course is completed in 45 days, or one quarter.
With the alternating day schedule, students complete a "full year" course by taking an 85-minute class every other day for the entire year. Similarly, they complete a "one semester" course by taking it every other day for one semester. The "Red Day" and "White Day" designations on the schedule pertain only to courses offered in the alternating day format.
In the new Program of Studies, the way in which every course is offered is listed under each course title. Students need to select courses to balance their schedules appropriately. For example, if a student takes an AP course on an alternating day schedule, he or she will need to select one other course that is offered on the alternating schedule to dovetail with it.
