AP Composition Summer Reading/Preclass Assignment

The purpose of the AP Composition summer reading assignment is to help students augment their perspective on literature and life through the reading of significant literary titles. A broad reading of the titles on this list will be an essential foundation to your success on the AP exam. By the semester's end, you will have read nine titles from the list, and you will need to choose a minimum of two titles from each section.

For the summer assignment, you must select five novels from the list. AP Composition is intended to be a college level course, some texts contain mature themes, language and situations that may be objectionable to some; therefore, you must obtain parental permission before you read any title. Read each of your five novels critically and carefully.

On the first day of class, you must come with a 3X5 card that has the title of the five books you read. On day two, your card will be returned with one title circled. On that second day, you will be asked to write an essay based on your reading of that circled novel. You will not know which novel you will need to write on until you arrive at class the second day. Although you will only be officially assessed on one novel, expect to reflect on all five of your novels in the first week, and throughout the semester. We are confident that this will be a very beneficial exercise. Enjoy your summer, and enjoy your reading.
