SAHS Academics > English Department Web Site > Philosophy & Mission Statement > Investigating Language
Investigating language involves knowledge and use of Standard Written English including spelling, grammatical structures, word meanings and origins, and the evolution of language and diversity of dialects including pronunciation. Additionally, investigating language involves recognition of non-literal meanings and the figures of speech used to convey them i.e. similes, metaphors, or personifications.
Sound language arts instruction includes these concepts within the context of composition or literature study or in self-contained mini-lessons.
