SAHS > Souderton Academic Decathlon 2nd in Eastern PA Championship
On Saturday, February 7th, Souderton's Academic Decathlon team competed at the 31st Annual Eastern Pennsylvania Academic Decathlon competition held at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell.
This year's Academic Decathlon theme is New Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation, and students competed in art, economics, literature, mathematics, music, science, and social science, wrote an essay, and gave speeches and interviews. Students compete in three divisions based on GPA - honors (A), scholastic (B), and varsity (C).
Souderton placed 2nd in the event, scoring 33,809 points out of 60,000 possible. North Penn High School won the event, and both Souderton and North Penn will represent Eastern PA in the state championship in March.
Souderton had one member on the regional All-Star team, junior James Nyce. James earned 6 out of 10 possible event medals, and a bronze overall. In total, Souderton earned 23 medals in the competition.
Up next is the 31st PA Academic Decathlon state championship held in Albion, PA near Erie. This is Souderton's 3rd season competing in the Academic Decathlon and is coached by chemistry and physics teacher, Phil Cerami. Souderton has placed 5th in the state championship the past two years. The winner of the state championships will compete at the USAD National Finals in Garden Grove, California in April.
