SAHS > SAHS Student Passed Away
On Monday, October 15th, one of Souderton Area High School’s students died tragically. A young person’s death is always tragic and a sudden loss like this can have a very strong impact on surviving students.
It is important that we recognize this loss and offer help. This is a sensitive issue for young people and it is important that you talk to your children about their feelings.
We are especially concerned about those in our school who are experiencing strong emotions. Sudden death is always painful to understand, and your adolescent may experience signs of stress, including:
- Difficulty sleeping
- Changes in sleeping
- Inability to concentrate
- Thoughts about death or dying
- Withdrawing from normal activities and friends
- Fearfulness and worries
- Use of alcohol or other drugs
- Risk-taking behaviors (e.g., driving too fast or carelessly; use of firearms; “dares” to behave dangerously)
We are especially concerned about risk-taking behaviors and strongly recommend that you remove any guns from homes where there are adolescents experiencing grief and related stress. Similarly, remove from your adolescent’s access any medications, drugs, or alcohol. Young people may be overwhelmed by their feelings and may not use good judgment, especially if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Your adolescent may resist these restrictions, but safety is our first concerns.
Today at Souderton and at North Montco, counselors are available for students to discuss the situation. At Souderton Area High School, counselors will be in the Guidance Office and the Auditorium for students.
If you have specific concerns to share or discuss, please contact your student’s counselor at
267-203-0117. If your student was a friend of the youth who has died, we urge you to call
Guidance for additional suggestions.
Written excuses from parents will be required for students who want to attend the funeral.
We will continue to inform you of the school’s steps in supporting students and their families. Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions or information that you would like to share.
