Commemoration: Open House Slideshow and Summary
1931-2009 Great History... Exceptional Future! After 78 years, Souderton Area High School on School Lane will be officially closing its doors on June 17, the last day of school. A mega reunion and open house were held on May 30, 2009, inviting alumni, staff, students, and community members to make a final visit. Over 1,000 guests strolled down memory lane and the high school hallways as they remembered back to special times in their lives. Memorabilia, photos, old yearbooks, an alumni table, and display from the Education Foundation were on display in the gymnasium. Former coaches gathered in the gym lobby and greeted former athletes to relive special moments in sporting history. Stories were swapped, hallways were explored, pictures were snapped, and nostalgia flowed. Musical groups entertained throughout the day, the school store sold Souderton merchandise, the cafeteria kept everyone fed. Old memories were revisited when the time capsule from the 1959 date stone was opened and 50-year-old treasures were revealed. Among the items receiving the white glove treatment were local newspapers, a bible, and school yearbook. Local vendors set up tables in the courtyard to mark this special day. A closing ceremony featuring alumni members, Hall of Famers, school board members, former superintendents, and administrators was held in the auditorium at the end of the day. The Honorable Paul W. Tressler ('58), Court of Common Pleas, Montgomery County, provided the keynote address taking the audience on a trip from tears to laughter. Special thanks for organizing such a memorable event goes to Karen Hengey, secretary to the principal at Souderton Area High School and historian for the SAHS Alumni Association.
