Students > Student Handbook > General Information > Class Rank/GPA
Class rank designates the rank of each student in relationship to every other student in the class. Class rank is computed cumulatively at the conclusion of each semester. Class rank is computed with marking period grades rather than final marks.
Students pursuing college courses at a recognized school on a part-time basis and continuing to carry courses at the high school will have those eligible high school courses computed in class rank.
Class rank will be calculated at the end of each semester and will be computed by using quality points as follows:
- Grade x Credit x Weight = Quality Points
- Calculate total Quality Points for the marking period
- Calculate total number of attempted credits for each marking period completed
- Total Quality Points divided by Total Credits attempted = Grade Point Average
- Rank in Class (RIC) will be determined by order of the highest G.P.A.
Grade Value:
A+ = 4.33 B+ = 3.33 C+ = 2.33
A = 4.00 B = 3.00 C = 2.00
A- = 3.66 B- = 2.66 C- = 1.66
D+ = 1.33 F = 0
D = 1.00 F- = 0
D- = .066
Credit Value:
Determined by the assigned credit for the course divided by the number of marking periods, which the course meets. (Ex. A full-credit course is 1 credit. 1.0 divided by 4 M.P. = .25 credits per M.P.)
Weight Value:
As listed in the Program of Studies, Values are 1.00, 1.25, or 1.50.
| Example: |
Grade x Credit |
x Weight |
= Value |
| German II |
(B)3 x .25 |
x 1.0 |
= .75 |
| English |
10 (B)3 x .25 |
x 1.0 |
= .75 |
| Global Studies |
(A)4 x .25 |
x 1.0 |
= 1.00 |
| Biology |
(A)4 x .25 |
x 1.0 |
= 1.00 |
| Geometry |
(A)4 x .25 |
x 1.0 |
= 1.00 |
| Totals |
1.25 |
|
4.50 |
4.5 divided by 1.25 = 3.6 GPA for marking period.
Class Rank/GPA - Class of 2009 and Beyond
Class Rank is calculated using quality points and is not based on cumulative GPA. Quality points are a cumulative record of all final grades multiplied by the course weight and course credit. Class ranks are run twice a year - at the end of semester one and at the end of the year.
For more information, students may consult the SAHS Program of Studies or visit the SAHS Guidance Office.
GPA Calculation
Two types of GPA are calculated at the High School - a weighted and an unweighted GPA. GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points by the total of credits. Using our student examples from above:
Student A had 11.75 quality points and 3 credits. This student would have a weighted GPA of 3.916. In order to calculate an unweighted GPA Student A's quality points would have to be adjusted by removing the course weight. Therefore Student A would have 11.00 unweighted quality points and an unweighted GPA of 3.666.
The Valedictorian is that graduating senior who has attained the highest Grade Point Average on the basis of marks received in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade at the end of quarter 3 in the senior year.
The Salutatorian is that graduating senior who has attained the second place in such ranking at the end of quarter 3 in the senior year.
