Academic Decathlon State Champions 2021

Academic Decathlon Wins PA State Title 2021

On March 7, 2021, students from across Pennsylvania competed in the 37th annual Pennsylvania Academic Decathlon, held online this year. There was a total of 14 teams, representing district champions and wild card teams from throughout the state. Souderton, by virtue of their state title, advances to the USAD National Championships being hosted virtually in late April.

Students competed in eight events (speech and interview cancelled due to the online nature of the competition) – essay, math, music, literature, science, social science, art, and economics, and the nine-member teams have three honors or “A” students, three scholastic or “B” students, and three varsity or “C” students, forcing teams to work together across different ability levels to learn the same content. The subjects are always centered on a theme. This year’s theme was The Cold War.

Senior captain Magen Swartley not only won the title of Individual State Champion for having the highest individual score in the entire state tournament, but her 9,096 points is the highest score ever recorded by an Academic Decathlete in PA, breaking the previous record held by Penns Valley’s Maria McQuaide set in 2015 (9,068 points).

Four Souderton students were selected to the PA All-State Team: Seniors Magen Swartley and Roman Stanell in the Honors Division, Jude Kane in the Scholastic Division, and Zander Jenkins in the Varsity division.

Souderton scored of 44,224 out of 60,000 possible points, beating 2nd place Seneca Valley High School in Pittsburgh by 711 points. Souderton has been competing in the Academic Decathlon since 2013, and this is their second state title. Souderton’s first and previously only state title was won in 2018.
