Souderton Academic Decathlon Wins Eastern PA Regional Title

On Saturday, February 4th, 2023, students from across eastern Pennsylvania competed in the 39th annual Eastern Pennsylvania Academic Decathlon, held at Methacton High School in Eagleville, PA. By virtue of Souderton’s regional title, they advance to the PA State Championships being hosted at Thiel College on March 3rd and 4th. The winner of the state championship will advance to the USAD National Finals in Frisco, TX in late April.
Students competed in ten events – essay, speech, interview, math, music, literature, science, social science, art, and economics, and the nine-member teams have three honors or “A” students, three scholastic or “B” students, and three varsity or “C” students, forcing teams to work together across different ability levels to learn the same content. The subjects this year were centered on a theme – The American Revolution. 8 of the 9 members of the Eastern PA All-Region Team were Souderton students, with Senior Marcus Smith being awarded the individual regional champion title for the highest score in the entire competition.
Souderton scored of 39,779 out of 60,000 possible points, beating 2nd place Methacton High School by 9,890 points. Souderton has been competing in the Academic Decathlon since 2013 and has won 5 regional titles and 2 state titles in that time.
